The registration tax (TMC / BIV)

Registering a vehicle in Belgium is subject to a one-off registration tax, known as TMC in French and BIV in Dutch. Its amount depends heavily on your region of residence.

Wallonia and Brussels

  • Scale based on power: fiscal horsepower or kilowatts, whichever gives the higher amount.
  • Amount capped at the top of the grid for very powerful vehicles (in the region of €5,000).
  • In Wallonia, a CO2-linked eco-penalty (malus) may be added depending on the vehicle.

Flanders

  • A specific formula factoring in CO2 emissions, the Euro standard, fuel type and the vehicle's age.
  • High-emitting combustion engines are heavily taxed there; electric cars enjoy a very favourable regime.

Belgian fiscal horsepower: a different logic

  • Belgian fiscal power is not calculated the way it is in France: it relies on its own grid.
  • To compare with the French system, use the French fiscal horsepower calculator, keeping in mind that the scales differ.
