⚠️ Identification note. The 300 SL (W198) exists as a Gullwing coupé (W198 I, 1954–1957, gullwing doors) and a roadster (W198 II, 1957–1963, conventional doors). Derived from the racing car (W194), it was the first production car to feature direct petrol injection. Not to be confused with the 190 SL (4 cylinders, less powerful) nor with the 300 SLR (racing car with 8 cylinders). See section 10.

Collectability & valuation
- Rarity
- 3 258 units in total; Gullwing coupé (1 400) and especially aluminium coupés (29) extremely sought after; 'Sports Car of the Century' (1999)
- Desirability
- absolute icon, first production direct injection, gullwing doors, provenance/matching numbers and options (Rudge wheels, matching luggage) all critical; values very high (aluminium > 1 M$)
- Points to watch
- swing rear axle (tendency to oversteer at the limit), specialist maintenance required (mechanical injection), authenticity/numbers matching, corrosion; expert inspection essential
- Valuation
- on request (price bracket + comparables + sources + date; significant premium for aluminium coupé / provenance)
